Policies and Procedures
Here's what I'm picturing. Something simple and flexible, with just enough rules to provide impetus. The goal is to post something--anything--every week, responding in some way to the chosen subject. The first person to post each week will also choose the upcoming subject for the following week (to be stated at the end of the post). Subjects can be anything--love, war, toast, frogs, socks, death, embarrassing experiences, dreams (literal or otherwise). To simplify, let's stick with the traditional Sunday-to-Saturday calendar week.
When I say "anything," I really am picturing anything: aimless diary-style rambling, a poem, a researched and informative news-magazine-style piece, a single sentence saying "I got nothing on this subject". Anything! My goal here is to oblige myself to do some kind of writing every week, since normally my only writing is overly wordy texts and e-mails to friends and family, or pointless capitalistic massaging of marketing-adjacent text for work. At this point anything at all would improve my relationship to writing. And I really like the idea of doing this with other people, because of the encouragement/motivation effect, and because I could always use more human interaction (I completely count reading other people's writing attempts as interaction; if that's an indictment of my social skills I don't care).
Input is welcome, sporadic participation is welcome (although I suspect it's a more enjoyable project if the weekly framework is followed), and friends of friends are welcome--just ask to be authorized to post and I'll set you up. And mediocrity, cynicism, silliness, and grandiose self-seriousness are all welcomed with open arms.
It could be like The Toast
ReplyDeleteAh, perhaps it's no coincidence that toast came to mind as a possible subject!
DeleteRelatedly, I'm not sure what to think about the fact that when I saw your comment my first impulse was to try to find the "like" option. And now I feel bereft without the Alarmed Face emoji. It's a bit scary how Facebook has colonized my reflexes. I hate to be That Alarmist Luddite, but "they" are truly physically modifying our neurons, now that I think about it [Alarmed Face emoji followed by Eyeroll emoji followed by Brain emoji].
DeleteBe the alarmist luddite that you wish to be.
DeleteGreat flow of ideas!
